Supermarket private label canned pineapples are typically imported.

Beware: pineapple juices from Golden Circle (and other brands) may not be made with Australian juice so read labels carefully.

Buying a particular brand does not guarantee Australian product.

The best way to guarantee truly Australian ham and bacon is to look at the bar chart under the green and gold kangaroo and ensure it is almost full.

Label tricks

Sadly, many other soy mylk manufacturers in Australia are exploiting a labelling loophole that allows them to claims their soy mylk is "Made in Australia with 89% (or 91%) Australian ingredients" even though the soy in their soy mylk is imported.

The reason the percentage of 'Australian' ingredients is so high is because the manufacturer can include added water in their percentage calculation. In other words, these companies are taking imported soy protein isolate, adding it to Australian water and claiming it's 89% / 91% Australian ingredients.

Beware sneaky imports

Frozen and canned vegetables are a staple pantry favourite but many brands use imported ingredients.

Australia's vegetable growers have launched a new campaign to help consumers find Australian grown vegetables here.

Never assume because one product from a particular brand is made with Australian grown ingredients that every product from that company is also made with Aussie ingredients.

SPC, for example, openly acknowledge they can't source all their ingredients from Aussie growers but always choose Aussie first where possible.

As another example, Golden Circle ensure their canned pineapple is made with Australian grown fruit but most of their juice range contains large percentages of imported juice.
